• First story was published in 1978 in college magazine of Sree Sankara College, Kalady. First story published in periodical was in 1979. It was published in Samkramanam, notable parallel magazine .
• He won second prize in All Kerala Short story competition conducted by Malayala Manorama , famous Malayalam news paper in1983. ( story : Autobiography of a fox/ Oru Kurukkante Athmakathha) He bagged the First prize in the same competition in 1984 (Death of a street dog / Theruvu naayayude maranam). In 1984 he secured first prize in Essay Competetion and second prize in Short Story competition conducted by Mathrubhumi Weekly which is considered as a prestigious prize in the literary field of Malayalam even now. These achievements made easy to the entry into the Malayalam Literature.
• Published several short stories upto 1989. After a period of silence up to 1994 he returned to the creative world with a notable story named Deconstruction. During the period from 1994 to 1998 he was very active in the field of Short story. Published story collections named Guhachithrangngal ( Cave Paintings, 1996) Marupuram ( Other side,2002 ) Gas chamber (2006) Chuvarezhuththu ( Wall writings,2011 ). Some of the stories were translated to various Indian Languages and English.
• Published 2 novels named Varshikarekha ( Annual Report, 2003) Vishamavrutham( Labyrinth, 2017). Varshikarekha was translated to Tamil language by Sadasivan named Kalachirpiyin Kaikalil (2007)

Reputed film director Shaji N Karun made a film Nishad in Hindi in 2002 based on a story (Gomathi Ammayude Veedu) of Mr. Valsalan. He wrote screen play along with Shaji N Karun for this film. This film was screened in many International Film Festivals. The film Nakharam was based on the story and screen play written by Mr. Valsalan. It was directed by T. Deepesh. Mr. Valsalan wrote story and screenplay for children’s film Ankuram and Swanam which were awarded as the best Children’s films by Kerala State Government in 2014 and 2017 respectively. It was screened in many National Film Festivals. Mr. Valsalan wrote screen plays for various short films. Save was the first film based on his script which was secured many awards. Type Writer, Murivu, Anyam, Island, Calendar, Anineyum Pennineyum Kurichu ( About Men and Women) are other short films based on his screen play. Type writer secured 6 state Television Awards in 2007 including best screen play. The screen play of Anineyum Pennineyum Kurichu is based on a story written by the renowned Malayalam writer M. Mukundan. This film produced and telecasted by Doordarsan. He directed a documentary Marayoor: Struggle for Survival along with Mr. Shaji Palayad dealing with the protection of Sandalwood Forests in Marayoor.

• Nediyamveetil Balakrishnamenon was an original critic who had been writing in various literary magazines at the period of first decades of 20 th century. Unfortunately he was forgotten by the literary history. During his M.Phil research Mr.Valsalan came to discover these critical writings and he collected and published these articles with a detailed study. In 1989 this collection named Novelpadanangal was published by D C Books Kottayam. This book was considered as a revealation of forgotten chapter of history.
• From 1990s publishing various critical studies in periodicals and journals. Ottayanmaarude Vazhi (2001) was the first collection of critical studies. Kathayum Fantasiyum ( Story and Fantasy,2004) Kathayude nucleus ( Nucleus of Short Story,2007) Pareekkutty enna Vasco Da Gama (2015) Malayala sahithyaniroopanam Adarukal Adayalangngal (2016) are the creitical books published by him. Published more than 60 articles as chapters in Anthologies.
• Editor of Malayalasahithyacharithram Volume 5 Cherukatha published by Kerala Sahithya Academy (2016) Edited the book Malayalakathha : Anubhavavum Akhyanavum (2018)published by Department of Malayalam, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady.

• Served as Member of Board of Studies, Faculty, Academic Council, Interview Boards, Examintion Boards, Publication Committee in various Universities . (KeralaUniversity, University of Calicut, Pondichery University, MG University, Malayalam University, Kannur University, Aligarh Muslim University , SS University etc.) Adjudicator of more than 100 Ph.D Theses and Chairman of several Open DefencesStories are included in the Syllabus of universities of Kerala. Research guide in 3 Universities. 5 scholars awarded Ph.D. Degree under his Research Guidance.Jury member in award selection committees including Kerala Sahithya Academy.
• Resourse person in academic Training Programmes for Teachers. Presented many research papers in National seminars conducted by Universities and Colleges. Published many research papers in Academic Journals. Editor of the Research journal Bhavikam of SS university, Kalady. Coordinator of many National and Regional seminars and Film Festivals.

He was the state Vice President of a popular children’s league of Kerala Akhila Kerala Balajana Sakhyam organized by Malayala Manorama News paper in 1981.This was the route through which he entered into the field of cultural activities. He secured state level prizes in the Arts festivals of Balajanasakhyam. His activities as an organizer was very commendable. He was the Vice President of T.P.Sukumaran Smaraka Samithi , Kannur. For past 14 years he is working as a Vice President of Yuvakalasahithi which is an important cultural organization of Kerala.
